How authorisation works

  1. The competence test. 25 multiple-choice questions on investing, the UKOGB Stock Exchange, the banks, ISAs and tax, and the FCA's rules. 18 to pass, within 30 minutes.
  2. The application. Experience, the planned strategy, the fees, and for a firm the staff who will manage money, plus a fitness check on the applicant's record.
  3. The FCA decides. A person at the FCA reads it, checks the record and approves or refuses. The FCA can later suspend, revoke or fine, and every action is shown here.
